To a Little Invisible Being Who is Expected Soon to Become Visible

Anna Lætitia Barbauld

Germ of new life, whose powers expanding slow
For many a moon their secret course have run,
Till nature bids thee burst thy prison bars,
Drop the dry husk, and spring, a tender shoot,
Into the keen keen air, and lift thy face
To the bright sun with wonder:
Yet a while — the toiling months are not yet spent;
A little longer, and the time shall come
When thou shalt quit thy dark abode and see
This bright and busy world which thou hast not yet learnt to know.

Verse breaks and indentation are preserved. Wrapped lines have a hanging indent. Width adapts to your screen.

Works of Anna Laetitia Barbauld, 1825.
