Mary Robinson
Pavement slippery, people sneezing,
Lords in ermine, beggars freezing;
Tumbled from their cars of pride,
Friends to the poor, now side by side.
Pulpits loudly giving warning,
Xmas passed, yet little adorning;
Hopeless is the poor man's lot,
Leisure for the rich, but not.
Young men, whom no wiles can check,
Old maids with a sigh in peck;
Blue-faced, shivering to the marrow,
Pete's the dog, and John's the sparrow.
